This is the current configuration of my 1972 VW Super Beetle as I continue to dial in my Kadron carb setup and bring this vintage motor to life.
Date | Idle Jets | Main Jets | Mixture Screws | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
? | 55 | 130 | 1.5 out | Initial test, lean and popping when cold. |
? | 57.5 | 130 | 1.5 out | Initial baseline, lean surge under light throttle. |
? | 57.5 | 130 | 1.25 out | Lean condition worsened, popping when cold. |
? | 57.5 | 130 | 1.75 out | Idle improved, better behavior overall, but transition still had hesitation. This trial was brief. |
2025-06-14 | 60 (drilled) | 130 | 1.5 out | Richer idle smell, better cold performance, minimal transition hesitation only when hunting for it. |
2025-06-15 | 60 (drilled) | 130 | 1.5 out | Cold drive showed popping under load until warm. Once warm, great behavior. Rich idle smell still present. |
2025-06-17 | 60 (drilled) | 130 | 1.5 out | After long drive, slight lean popping in 3rd gear observed. Will continue tuning for best idle and evaluate behavior. |
2025-06-22 | 60 (new) | 130 | 1.25 out | Temp ~66°F. New actual 60 idle jets installed. Lean popping continues approx. 45 mph in 3rd gear and slight lean surge in 4th at ~50-60 mph. Noticing that the circuit is lean until fully warm. |
2025-06-23 | 65 | 130 | 0.75 out | New idle jets resolved lean surge issue. Transition point has shifted from ~45 mph to ~50 mph in 3rd gear, making it largely irrelevant for normal driving. Minor snotty behavior only when intentionally hunting for it. |
